32-year-old vigilante shoots self while trying to arrest suspect

A vigilante in the Federal Capital Territory has mistakenly shot himself while trying to arrest a suspect.

According to reports, the incident happened at Dei-Dei community in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), around 12 am on Wednesday, April 2.

The vigilante operative, identified as Mujahid Ibrahim, a 32-year-old man who was trailing a suspect in the middle of the night, mistakenly fired his rifle, injuring his feet.

At least seven cartridges extracted from his body, and an X-ray is being conducted for possibilities of more cartridges in his body.

Further reports revealed that the incident happened after a resident of the neighbourhood arrived around 12:am, which was against the 11pm agreed time.

“My colleague, who attended to him, tried in vain to make him understand the rule, but instead for him to cooperate, he resorted to violence and in an effort to scare him, I cooked my rifle pointing toward the sky.

“I later withdrew the rifle back to my shoulder, but forgot to pull it back and in the process of running toward him as the man was having a scuffle with my colleague, the gun fired out some bullets that hit me around my feet,’’ the victim said.

The colleague of the victim who rushed him to the hospital, Ben Isaac, added that the resident fled after the incident, but his elder brother took responsibility for all medical expenses.

He added that a 24-hour warning was issued to him to appear or get arrested.
