Lift embargo on employment to replace retired workers – Workers urge Gov. Badaru

Story from Dahiru SULEIMAN, Dutse

The Jigawa State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has frowned over the massive retirements of the state workforce without replacement, hence it called on Governor Badaru to as a matter of urgency lift the embargo on the replacement of retired civil servants especially in areas of health, education among other sectors.

“We felt saddened with an increase in the retirement of the state workforce without replacement, hence there is the need for the Jigawa state government to have a re-think on this unwholesome trend, to find a workable solution,” said the NLC Chairman.

Speaking on the occasion of this year’s Workers Day at the NLC Secretariat in Dutse, the Chairman, Comrade Sunusi Alasan Maigatari, also called on the state government to expedite action in the implementation of an increase in pension dues to retired civil servants,  as well the inclusion of members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in the board of trustees of the state and local government contributory scheme being major stakeholders.

Other demands forwarded by the NLC unbehalf of the state’s civil servants include the payment of leave allowances which was promised by Governor Badaru about three years ago unfulfilled.

“We are appealing to Governor Badaru to redeem his earlier pledge in settling all outstanding workers annual leave grant promised about three years back, among other payments of other allowances as motivation to workers for increased productivity”.

He commended the government for maintaining the prompt payment of monthly salary and pension when due.

In his speech, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Ibrahim Ahmed Kwaimawa, lauded the cordial relationship between the executive and the NLC.

He promised to forward the union’s demands for prompt consideration and implementation to the government.
