Yobe Trial Census: NPC commences training of field personnel

In continuation of preparations for the conduct of the 2023 population and housing census in Yobe State, the National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced state level workshop for field personnel to be engaged for the trial census from Monday 27 June to Friday 8th, July 2022.
The NPC Federal Commissioner in Yobe State, Mai Aliyu Muhammad, announced in a press briefing in Damaturu.
According to him, the 12-day training, which is taking place at NUJ Centre Damaturu, Yobe State is to equip field functionaries with the required skills to effectively and efficiently deliver on the exercise.
“A total of 110 field functionaries consisting of facilitators, supervisors and enumerators have been carefully selected for the trial census through an online recruitment process”.

“The trial census is to be conducted from 11 to 24th July 2022. The house numbering will take place from 11th to 16th July to be followed by validation of enumeration area frame from 17 to 19 July and enumeration of persons from 20th July to 24th July 2022”.
He added that “The trial census, which is a dress rehearsal, is to evaluate all aspects of the census operations before the main census on a limited scale.
“The specific objectives are to assess the quality of the EA maps, determine requisite educational qualification for enumerators, the estimated workload of the enumerators, logistics support for the main census among others”.
“The trial census in Yobe State will be conducted in one supervisory area in nine (9) Local Government Areas of the state with three LGAs selected in each of the three senatorial districts.
The LGAs that will be covered are, Gulani, Geidam and Yunusari LGAS in Zone ‘A’, while Fune, Potiskum and Nangere LGAs in Zone ‘B’, and Jakusko, Yusufari and Karasuwa LGAs in Zone C respectively”.
Declaring the training workshop open, the Honourable Commissioner of NPC in Yobe State Alhaji Mal Aliyu Muhammad reiterated the commitment of the present administration towards making the 2023 census a resounding success through the adoption of technological innovations at every stage of the process.
He urged the field personnel to demonstrate professionalism, diligence and patriotism, in their conduct during the exercise.
“We also wish to express our gratitude to the administration of Honourable Mai Mala Buni, the executive Governor of Yobe State for the huge support and assistance that has always been granted to the commission”.
Topics to be covered at the training of the trial census field personnel are census methodology, planning and operations, use of digital maps and Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAP), building numbering and household listing, enumeration procedure, completion of census questionnaire, and use of historical events and special population which will be complemented with the hands-on exercise and field practices to ensure that personnel knowledge and skills are deepened.
