The Ministry of Women Affairs has on Thursday began the training of rural women on income and livelihood support for women in the North East.
Speaking at the flag off of the training in Jalingo, Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Pauline Tallen said the training will create awareness on the need to adequately care, protect and honour the rural women for their immense contributions to the growth, peace, and survival of Nigeria.
Represented by Mr. Festus Bakpet, the Minister said rural women who contribute to the development of the country do earn little or no income, respect, and recognition.
Tallen noted that rural women belong to the vulnerable group with peculiar needs and aspirations which directly affect their quality of lives, adding that the majority of rural women are faced with challenges of poverty and terminal illness.
“It is on this note that the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs is encouraging, strengthening and promoting the activities that will improve the livelihood and wellbeing of rural women.
“They are faced with various constraints of finance, poor education, lack of freedom, unequal opportunities and sexual abuse amongst others.
“We have, therefore, worked assiduously in putting in place this programme which is geared towards addressing numerous challenges facing rural women in the country and to give them some encouragement,” she said.
The Minister assured that the programme will promote the participation of women in income generation and self sufficiency through training in vocational skills for women to be self reliant.
While thanking the Taraba government for accepting to host the programme, the Minister encouraged the participants to take advantage of the training to better their lives.
Earlier Director, Child Development in the Taraba State Ministry of Women Affairs Mrs. Elizabeth Kwanche thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for approving the training.
Kwanche enjoined the women to take the training seriously so that they could benefit from it.
