Finance Minister differs on CBN’s plan to redesign naira

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, is not in agreement with the proposed plan by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to redesign some of the country’s currency notes.

She even warned that the move by the apex bank may have dire consequences on the country’s troubled economy.

She made this known on Friday, October 28, 2022 while responding to a question raised by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele during the 2023 budget defence session she had with the Senate Committee on Finance.

Senator Bamidele had in his question, told the Finance Minister that barely two days after announcement of the policy by CBN, repercussions of it on the value of naira to US dollar was being felt.

Neptune Prime reports that the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele announced that the apex bank will introduce a new design of the N200, N500 and N1,000 notes into circulation from December 15, 2022 which is in line with the provision of CBN Act.
