Kubwa Train Accident: Victim’s husband faults videoing instead of helping wife

Story from Fa’izatu Aliyu DOMA, Abuja

Alhaji Fatai Suleiman, the aggrieved husband of late Selimota Suleiman, the NTA Channel Five staff who was crushed while crossing railway track at Kubwa on the 15th of December, said someone was recording his wife while she was trying to open the car to come out instead of helping her.

While Mr Fatai feels people refuse to help his wife and the person recording should have try to save her. It’s also risky for anyone to try to save her as at the time the train is already approaching.

In an exclusive interview with Punch News, the bereaved husband spoke about his relationship with his late wife, the kind of person she was, some other things and how he got to know about the unfortunate incident. He narrated that on the day of the incident he was lying on a coach as he watch his wife prepared for work because he didn’t intend to go to office that day.

He narrated that after his wife left the house, he quickly went out to his friend’s house to pick up something. While at his friend’s, his friend’s wife ran into the house and broke the news but she wasn’t sure if it was Selimota’s car. They all rushed to the accident scene after she told them about the about the incident.

“I was unable to confirm if it was my wife or not when i got to the scene, as security personnel prohibited anyone from getting close to the accident scene”. However, I was able to confirm later when someone called my wife’s brother with my wife’s number to tell him she sustained an injury.

By the time her body was recovered, she has given up the ghost completely, he noted. Hence, she was buried same day according to Islamic rites.

Reacting to the report that some eyewitness brought out phones to record the incident, the bereaved husband says he doesn’t want to watch the video. He wonders why peoples instinct was to record a vulnerable person who was struggling for her dear life rather than to lend a helping hand to her.

Commenting on the post on Opera News Official. Someone wrote: there was nothing anyone can do to help her then because the electromagnetic current on the rail affected the engine as well as the dock lock/open mechanism. She shouldn’t have attempted to beat the train. Quite preventable and very sad incident. May God Almighty comfort her husband and the family she left behind and grant them fortitude to bear her painful and untimely death. Amen …

I heard that somebody somewhere was making a video of the incident but I wonder why that person was doing that instead of helping a fellow human being. But I believe it is the work of God.

He added that, passerby only started to render help after the calamity had occured.
