Foundations train 70 girls on hygiene, life skills in Adamawa

The Malala Foundation in partnership with Jami Al Hakeem Foundation has trained 70 girls on hygiene, life skills and Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Speaking at the end of the four days training, Ms Zulfat Aliu, Education Officer, Jami Al Hakeem Foundation, said the training was for Girls (G4G) members in three selected local government areas in the state.

She said 30 girls were selected from Mayo-Belwa, 20 from Girei and 20 from Mubi-North Local Government.

Aliu said the objective of the programme was to increase girls-child attendance and retention in public primary and junior secondary schools in Adamawa, Borno, Gombe and Yobe States.

“It is also to identify barriers that stopped girls from attending schools and fill the gaps to enable the inclusion of girls in schools.

“During the four days of training, the participants were trained on the right to education, benefit of education, GBV, menstrual hygiene, hand washing, leadership and skills acquisition for them to succeed in life,’’ she said.

She advised the mentors to make their schools friendly for girls to feel free and acquire knowledge to succeed in future.

In her address, Mrs Nancie Ahmadu, the facilitator of the training appreciated the conduct of the girls throughout the training.

She urged them to apply the knowledge acquired into practice and step it down to their families, friends and relatives as well as their children.

Ahmadu said, “When you grow up, you will be trained on what to do if you start seeing menstruation, hygiene, and other changes in the body when grown up, so you should also be careful not to allow a person to touch your private part”.

Mr Filibus Timothy, Senior Master, Government Junior Secondary School, Girei appreciated the contribution of the foundation on educating the girl-child in the school.

He said that the training is of great benefit not only to the girls but the community and the society, in general going by its importance in life.

Timothy also expressed the need for the foundation to expand the training for more girls to benefit across schools in the area.
