Naira Scarcity: Lawmaker slams Gov. El-Rufai over move against Buhari’s directive
A lawmaker, representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, Samaila Suleiman, has described the move by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as funny by countering President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive that the the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) should re-inject the old N200 note into circulation for 60 days and banning the use of the old N500 and N1,000 notes as against the Supreme Court order.

The lawmaker in a report by The Guardian said the Governor’s state broadcast hours after President Buhari’s directive was illegal and an outright treasonable counter order.
He said: ”The illegal, unwarranted and outright treasonable counter order made by el-Rufai on February 16, 2023, via his statewide broadcast was an attempt to be clever by half, by portraying that his (el-Rufai’s) outburst was done in the interest of the downtrodden talakawa and the rule of law, which he disdains so much by most of his anti-people policies as governor of Kaduna State.”
The lawmaker added: ”This is indeed funny, coming from el-Rufai whom the people of Kaduna State and Nigeria have come to know as a public officer that lacks compassion for the masses. We, the people of Kaduna State and Nigeria, do not and will never suffer collective amnesia.”
The lawmaker, however accused the Governor of flagrant disobedience to court orders saying he – Governor El-Rufai does not have the moral latitude to approach the apex court over the currency crisis.
“The same el-Rufai, whose second name is ‘Disobedience to Court Orders’ running to the same court he demeans, maligns and holds in extreme contempt!” “In fact, the man El-Rufai does not have the moral right to approach our courts for any remedy, as he has done in this case by approaching the apex court, invoking its original jurisdiction over the currency issue,” he added.
Neptune Prime reported on Sunday, February 19, that the Kaduna state government has ordered its Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the state to make transactions in old naira notes and ensure that their revenue collection agents continue to accept payments made in all denominations of the old and new naira notes.
