Tears of the defeat (1), by Dr. Aminu Salihu Yakudima

Most politicians in Nigeria, particularly those in positions of authority want to perpetuate themselves in power for several years, and those who contested election by all means possible, get blind folded over their ambitions and refuse to follow the path of legitimacy and fair play. More often, their refusal for not relinquishing the ambition hinges on strong conviction in an awful system full of impunity, which they gradually built, developed and promoted over the years. Some of them also believe in recklessness as a norm because they placed themselves above the law.

Once these mentalities get into their instincts, you can see sudden changes in their human psyche and instance manifestations of arrogance in what they do. The entrenchment of democracy and enforcement of the rule of law in Nigeria are regrettably being hampered by the tendencies of these leaders and primordial sentiments they promoted.

Again, promulgated policies that often resulted in somersault, unpopular decisions by government at various levels and miscarriage of justice in some courts of law as witnessed frequently in this dispensation are consequences of the awful system we are complaining about in today’s Nigeria. Political leadership has no shortcut to its fundamentals and processes, which must change before we get things right in the country.

No politician can realise any ambition just from the blues, without going through the rudimentary arrangements of political parties, which is called internal democracy and all that which was provided by law, in and outside the purview of party structures, with particular reference to electoral act.

What is more disturbing in the prevailing circumstances to most of us was the attitudinal posture of some charlatans in the party leadership and government who bent rules and ignored constitutional provisions and fatally flawed regulations. Unfortunately, they do all these out of egoism and in an attempt to stop the flow of tears of defeat. They also support rascalism in order to satisfy others and dictate our affairs for their own personal benefit or to protect certain interests.

Others come to terms with power mongers and desperate politicians after being compromised. They arrogantly believed that every nonsensical arrangement is possible in politics and can be swept under the carpet or be allowed to surface unchallenged.

This article is to recapitulate some recent undemocratic events involving some idiot and unpatriotic politicians, ugly activities of political parties, maladministration of some States Governors that never was in the political history of Nigeria etc.

Level of lawlessness, lack of motivational inspiration, unfairness in the polity, impunity of political parties, election malpractice and government’s harsh policies in the last and this dispensation were reasons for sharp divisions among Nigerians, eruptions of political violence and lack of good governance for rapid development.

Looking at some States in Northern Nigeria like Zamfara and Kano, from all spheres such as socio-economic and political development have convinced a greater percentage of politicians and non politicians alike to join the clamour for change in support of an energetic, intelligent and young politician, Dr. Dauda Lawan Dare. The emergence of Dauda Lawan as a brand new Executive Governor of Zamfara State, will bring remarkable dividends of democracy to the good people of Zamfara State.

Lawan is not only competent and ready for the job, but sufficiently equipped to make a huge difference in governance and dismantle shackles of poverty, squalor, hunger and starvation that bedevilled the people of Zamfara State and are still hitting harder. Other things that Dauda Lawan promised to tackle with immediate effect after inauguration include kidnapping, banditry and thuggery with ultimate desire of achieving a resounding success in provision of security.

Dauda Lawan Dare as a professional banker is visible in the leadership of the Nigerian Banking Industry for a very long time. Undoubtedly, this background will facilitate his rescue mission of Zamfara State from the challenges aforementioned and many more. He is going to be a Governor with special interest in the economy of Zamfara State.
