Fatal collision on Lagos-Badagry Expressway results in 14 deaths, including infant
Fourteen people, including a four-month-old baby, tragically lost their lives on Sunday morning in a devastating auto accident along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Lagos.
Mr. Williams Manga, the Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), shared this heartbreaking information with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry on Sunday.
Manga stated that the accident occurred at around 7:31 a.m. at the Agemowo section of the road. A commercial bus (Mazda) with registration number MUS 411 XU, carrying 19 passengers and traveling from Lagos, collided with a granite truck bearing registration number AKM 926YQ, which was coming from Badagry.
“The accident happened at approximately 7:31 a.m. while it was raining heavily along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. My team arrived at the scene at about 7:41 a.m. and immediately transported the injured to the General Hospital in Badagry. Unfortunately, the deceased were taken to the hospital’s mortuary,” Manga explained.
He further revealed that out of the 14 casualties, eight were male passengers, five were female, and one was a four-month-old baby girl. The accident was attributed to over speeding by both vehicles in adverse weather conditions.
Fortunately, the truck driver remained unharmed. Manga used the opportunity to remind motorists to adhere to speed limits and regularly maintain their vehicles to promptly identify and address any faults.
When NAN correspondent visited the accident scene, the atmosphere was filled with grief as some individuals were unable to hold back tears. Mrs. Theresa Avoseh, who was present at the scene, mentioned that those involved in the accident were returning home after celebrating with their relatives in Makoko, Lagos.
“The bus, which was loaded around 5:30 a.m., was headed to Seme with passengers who had gone to celebrate with their relatives,” she said, emphasizing that the accident occurred during heavy rainfall.
Dr. Olatunde Bakare, the Medical Director of the General Hospital in Badagry, disclosed that ten of the victims were brought in already deceased.
Sadly, while his staff attended to the injured passengers, four more succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to 14. Bakare assured that they were doing everything possible to save the lives of the nine surviving passengers.
He urged motorists to prioritize safe driving, particularly during the rainy season.
It’s worth noting that a similar accident occurred on February 13, where five members of a family were feared dead in an auto crash along the same stretch of the expressway.
