UI first class graduate killed for stealing bread
Opuofoni Freeborn Ebimotimi, a first-class graduate of the University of Ibadan (UI), lost his life in Bayelsa State after reportedly being beaten for stealing bread.
According to a report by Peoples’ 93.1 FM in Yenagoa, Ebimotimi, a Business Administration graduate, was attacked and killed in the early hours of Sunday at Honeyhill Tombia, Bayelsa State.
New Telegraph uncovered that Ebimotimi, who hailed from the Korokorosei community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government area, was accused of theft from a local business owner. The situation escalated when an alarm was raised, resulting in an angry mob assaulting him.
Idisemi Opuofoni Freeborn, the victim’s younger sister, shared that neighbors and friends who witnessed the incident rushed to the scene and pleaded with the enraged youth to spare his life, offering to compensate double the amount for the stolen bread. However, their pleas fell on deaf ears, and the perpetrators chose to take his life.
Idisemi further revealed the hardship their family has endured since the passing of their father, explaining that desperation due to financial struggles led her brother to commit the act of theft.
She stated, “We are a family of seven, and life has been extremely challenging since our father’s death. I wrote my WAEC exams in 2019 but have not been able to continue my education at the university because of financial constraints.”
This tragic incident sheds light on the poignant struggles faced by individuals amidst difficult circumstances, emphasizing the need for compassion and support in our communities.
