Adamawa gov’t begins vaccination against cervical cancer

The Adamawa Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ADPHCDA) has introduced Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine into routine immunisation against cervical cancer among women.
Dr Suleiman Bashir, Executive Chairman of the agency disclosed this during an engagement session with partners and the media in Yola.
He said if the vaccine is given to girls aged nine to 14 years before exposure to the vurus, it offers the maximum protection.

He explained that the cervical cancer is the commonest cancer in women and common cause of death that affect vulnerable people.
Bashir said that the vaccine is safe, effective and free of charge, adding that it will be available across 670 public facilities in the state.
He further appreciated the role of media and urged them to sensitise people on the need to accept the vaccine against the cancer.
Dr Adamu Bello, Technical Officer World Health Organisation (WHO) in Adamawa said cervical cancer is one of the leading cause of maternal death among women.
He commended the effort of ADPHCDA for timely response by introducing the vaccine in to its routine immunisation plan unlike other states.
Dr Danladi Idrisa, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Adamawa programme officer urged all stakeholders to take the issue of vaccination with all seriousness for prevention of the deadly disease.
He assured that UNFPA will continue to support ADPHCDA to achieve its target.
Mr Innocent Udemezue, UNICEF representative appreciated media for the good partnership and called for effective sensitisation on the newly introduced vaccine.
