Customs CG emphasise collaboration with stakeholders to address mutual concerns

Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, the Acting Comptroller-General of Customs, has reaffirmed his commitment to working together with stakeholders, terminal operators, and port authorities to enhance economic development.
During his official visit to the Apapa Area Command on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, Adeniyi stressed the crucial role that Customs agents and importers play in port administration. He emphasized the need for a platform to address and resolve issues effectively, stating, “Customs Agents and importers play a very important role in the administration of the port, and that is why we believe in creating a regular platform for engagement on issues.”
“We extend this approach to not only Customs Agents but to all our stakeholders. We firmly believe in partnership and in using innovation to drive the desired change,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of other stakeholders, Dr. Kayode Farinto, a freight forwarder, acknowledged the existence of challenges but assured their unwavering support towards achieving success.
At the Lilypond Export Command, Adeniyi and his entourage were welcomed by Comptroller Mohammed Babandede, the Customs Area Controller. Adeniyi commended the establishment of export processing terminals, recognizing their potential to decongest the port and yield various other benefits.
“I commend the initiative of establishing dedicated terminals for exports as a means of boosting local production and earning foreign exchange,” Adeniyi expressed.
He urged exporters and other government agencies to continue partnering with Customs to facilitate the export process and ensure that businesses receive value for their investments.
He further stated, “It is a step in the right direction. I have had several discussions with the Customs Area Controller about how we can fine-tune the process to ensure that our exporters derive real value for their investments. I believe that we can reawaken Nigerians’ interest in the potential opportunities, so instead of searching for jobs that may not exist, they can engage meaningfully in ventures that will bring sustenance and prosperity.”
Likewise, on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, the Customs Boss held a breakfast meeting with representatives from shipping companies and terminal operators.
Emphasizing the importance of such partnerships, he highlighted the significance of discussing issues that serve everyone’s best interests.
“I firmly believe in the power of consultation and collaboration with our stakeholders. Whenever we need to discuss any issue, I expect one or two members to bring it up, and we will gladly arrange a meeting to address it,” Adeniyi stated.
The Acting CGC expressed his willingness to work harmoniously with all stakeholders to effectively manage issues of common interest, ensuring mutually beneficial outcomes for everyone involved.
