Future Cars Scratch-Free: Hyundai introduces nanotechnology coating for instant repair

Hyundai Motor has recently introduced six groundbreaking nanotechnologies, including a surface-coating technique designed to remove scratches from car surfaces and water from camera glasses.

Lee Jong-soo, Vice President of the Institute of Advanced Technology Development at Hyundai Motor Group, made this announcement at a press conference in Seoul on Thursday.

Unlike traditional chemical reactions, which involve a single event, Hyundai’s new polymer coating enables the vehicle to repair scratches within two hours at ambient temperatures.

In freezing temperatures, the process would take longer, approximately a day.

Furthermore, Hyundai is actively considering applying this cutting-edge technology to camera lenses or lidar sensors, which are critical components for autonomous vehicles.

Among the other nanotechnologies showcased by Hyundai is a new solar cell, sized at a nanometer, or one-billionth of a meter, that can be embedded into the vehicle’s surface.

While traditional solar cells use silicon, Hyundai’s new cells are transparent and more efficient. The company envisions equipping future vehicles with solar cells integrated into the car windows.

Additionally, Hyundai will utilize a new technology called “oil capsule polymer coating” to reduce the normal wear and tear on car parts, applying it to the chassis of new models in the coming months.

The company also demonstrated a transparent radiative cooling film, which could be applied to car windows to lower the interior temperature and reduce carbon emissions.

Hyundai has stated that some of these technologies will be ready for commercialization in the near future.

“Our researchers have worked diligently to develop these technologies,” said Hyundai Vice President Hong Seung-hyun during the media event in Seoul.

“The nanotechnology-based materials will pave the way for the future of the mobility business.”
