Nigerian Doctors’ Association to decide strike by Friday
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) announced that its National Executive Council (NEC) will reconvene by Friday to make a decision regarding the suspended nationwide protest and ongoing strike.
NARD President, Dr. Emeji Orji, stated that the association had met with the government and the senate, setting a 72-hour deadline from Tuesday night for the government to address their urgent demands.
Orji mentioned that if the government does not meet these crucial demands, which include the replacement of departed doctors, the NEC will gather once again to provide further directives.

“Following our meeting with the government and the senate president, they requested 24 hours. Given these interventions, we’re postponing the protest. We’re granting them 72 hours. Should our immediate demands remain unmet, our NEC will reconvene to decide whether to suspend the protest indefinitely,” he clarified.
The doctors on strike had previously threatened a nationwide mass protest and picketing of the Federal Ministry of Health, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, and all federal and state tertiary health institutions from August 9th, 2023.
Orji underscored that the suspended mass protest aimed to emphasize their demands, which they feel have been largely disregarded by the Federal Ministry of Health and the federal government.
The doctors initiated an indefinite strike due to what they perceive as the government’s failure to meet their requirements.
