Adamawa to become part of Cameroon in boundary settlement agreement

The House of Representatives ad hoc committee on international boundary dispute has made a decision to immediately transfer the region of Sina in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State to the Republic of Cameroon.

The ruling was made by the committee’s chairman, Beni Lar, during a hearing on ongoing boundary conflicts along the Nigeria-Cameroon borders. The committee also aimed to evaluate the role of the military and security agencies in protecting the country’s borders and territorial integrity.

The hearing was attended by the Director General of the National Boundary Commission, NBC, Adamu Adaji, a representative from Sina Area, Adamu Kamale, the Solicitor-General of the Federation, Beatrice Jedy-Agba, and representatives of security agencies.

Lar stated, “We have to continue this engagement with the relevant community and the boundary commission and come up with a solution. Let us go on a fact-finding mission and then we will intervene. The communities have a right and their right must be considered. This demarcation has to be put on hold until the disputes are resolved. It should be halted pending the resolution of this committee. We would visit Adamawa and come up with a comprehensive report.”

The committee agreed to assess the potential transfer of Sina to Cameroon and will visit Adamawa to gather more information for their report.

Director General of NBC, Adamu Adaji, explained that the demarcation was being carried out in accordance with a ruling from the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He added that the sub-commission on demarcation had already placed 2,214 pillars along the Nigeria and Cameroon boundary in Adamawa State. Adaji clarified that the boundary had been established based on treaties and agreements between colonial powers and that the ICJ ruling was simply to use these documents to re-establish the existing boundary.

On the other hand, the representative of Sina Area, Adamu Kamale, asserted that the disputed area was always Nigerian territory and not a settlement. Kamale raised concerns that the community was not considered during the demarcation process.

The committee’s hearing aimed to gather necessary information and perspectives to address the boundary dispute and ensure the security of Nigeria’s borders.

  1. Obasanjo did the same by ceding Bakassi to
Cameroon during his tenure as civilian president and now Tinubu. May be they think they have nothing to loose, and for Tinubu looking at his romance with France this is just a tip of the ice berg.
