Unmasking the Power of Misinformation: Media workshop shines light on tackling fake news, boosting media literacy

The responsibility of countering misinformation has again been amplified in an ongoing workshop organised by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) for media organisations in Abuja.

The three-day workshop which has support from the Embassy of the Republic of Germany was organised for participants to discuss the pressing issue of countering misinformation and promoting media literacy.

The event brought together representatives from thirty (30) media organisations across Nigeria as well as representatives of the German Embassy in Nigeria and Africa Check.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Dayo Aiyetan, the Executive Director of ICIR, highlighted the prevalence of misinformation and the urgent need to combat it’s spread.

Represented at the opening event by the  Editor of Fact Check Hub, Mr.Opeyemi Kehinde, he emphasized the complexity of identifying all forms of misinformation.

While commenting on the essence of the training, the German Embassy First Secretary (Political Affairs) , Mathias Dold queried deep fake technology that mimics the movements and voices of real individuals to the point where discerning the truth becomes nearly impossible.

He charged participants to utilize the knowledge gained from the training to properly understand information disorder.

Commending the ICIR for their diligent preparations and the German government for their unwavering support, Mr Aiyetan also expressed gratitude to all attendees for their dedication and commitment to confronting this growing concern of misinformation and its impact on society.

He urged participants to delve deeply into this important matter and continue their efforts in countering misinformation and promoting media literacy for a more informed and responsible society.
