The hospital administrator tried to dissuade him, cautioning that the room housed an elderly man who hadn’t spoken to anyone in years. Undeterred, Ali insisted on entering. Inside, he found an elderly African-American man, frail and bent with age.

In that moment, Ali’s humility and empathy shone brightly. He didn’t correct the man; instead, he acknowledged the truth in the old man’s words. Quieting the surprised onlookers, Ali left the room and remarked, “If it gave pleasure to that old man to think he met Joe Louis, then I’m Joe Louis.”
