Over 222 repentant thugs in Kano receive financial support, education

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has announced plans for the empowerment, education, and skill acquisition of 172 repentant thugs in the state.

The governor made this announcement during a Hangout event organized by the Kano State Police Command in partnership with the AMG Foundation, which aimed to collaborate with the police in fighting crime in local communities.

Governor Yusuf explained that the 222 repentant thugs had undergone various reformation processes, including classroom lectures on psychology and other aspects of human behaviorism.

He further mentioned that while 50 Special Constabulary volunteers had already been trained from crime-prone local government areas, the remaining 172 individuals had chosen to participate in skills acquisition programs supported financially by the government.

Expressing gratitude to the Inspector General of Police and Commissioner of Police for their support, Governor Yusuf commended the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force and Kano Command for spearheading transformative community policing initiatives.

He emphasized that the Hangout event symbolized his government’s commitment to ensuring the security of lives and properties of all residents in the state, inviting both local and foreign investors to partner with Kano for mutual benefits and socioeconomic development.

Governor Yusuf highlighted the importance of forgiveness in restoring offenders’ and victims’ confidence, stating that the integration of these influential youths, who had previously been used as political thugs, signaled positive progress towards building a crime-free state.

He encouraged the youths to seize the opportunity offered to them to prosper and contribute to the development of Kano State.

In a goodwill message, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, commended the transformation of the repentant thugs, emphasizing the non-kinetic approach adopted by the State Police Command in fighting crime. The event, which took place at the Sani Abacha Indoor Sports Stadium in Kano, was attended by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Emir of Kano, heads of security agencies, market traders associations, community leaders, and members of the Police Community Relations Committee.
