A very sad and tragic event occurred on Thursday 26, December 2019 as a young woman known as Martha Bulus, and her friends were murdered by some gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram.
The gang attacked their vehicle while they were traveling from Maiduguri to Yola, Adamawa State, for her wedding ceremony, scheduled to hold on 31, December 2019.
Miss Martha was going to tie the knot with her fiance, Joseph Zamdai, before her untimely demise.
Sources close to the family said that Miss Martha was traveling with friends who were supposed to be members of her bridal train on the day of the attack.
A source who pleaded anonymity said, “Martha and her friends were ambushed by suspected Boko Haram members who attacked them at a village near Gwoza, in Borno State, and all of them in the vehicle was shot dead”.
Although the road between Maiduguri and Gwoza has been reopened by the military, taking the route is still considered dangerous due to the high activities of Boko Haram insurgents there.
The group reportedly took off from Tashan Bama, a popular motor park near the University of Maiduguri.
The social media was flooded with the sad news of her death as her family, friends, and colleagues keep mourning her.
One of the deceased’s friends, Owoicho Johnson, posting on the bride to be Facebook page, wrote:
“Am heart-broken with the news of your death. When you called me yesterday morning (26, December 2019), you only told me you were at Tashan Bama about to travel to your village.
“I never knew that would be the last time I will ever hear from you. It’s devastating hearing the sad news of your demise along Gwoza road.”
Jubril Ujulu, who is a family member of the deceased, also confirmed on his Facebook page that Martha was traveling with a sister, Zainab, who was also killed in the attack.
Chioma Violet also wrote, saying, “I was planning to attend the wedding here in Yola because the father-in-law of the deceased is my principal where I work; can’t just believe it. Rest on dear. It is too painful.”
According to the United Nations, the Boko Haram insurgency in Northern Nigeria, especially within the northeastern states of Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe, has caused over 35,000 deaths of innocent people.
