Gov. Buni urges Yobe LG chairmen to pay keen attention to farmer-herder relations during harvest

Story from Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has urged newly appointed chairmen to pay close attention to farmers/herders’ relationships during the period of farm harvest as well as the migration of herdsmen and the general harmony at their respective local government areas in the state.

Governor Buni made the call during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed chairmen of the 17 Local Government Caretaker Management Committees, which took place at the banquet hall of government house Damaturu.

The Governor warned that the government will not condone any act capable of breaching peace among farmers and grazers in the rural communities.

“Grazers are advised not to trespass on farmlands that are yet to be harvested. On the other hand, farmers should not block the cattle routes to hamper the free movement of livestock.

“As we strive to improve food sufficiency and security in the state, l urge you to support farmers in your respective local government areas to embrace irrigation farming.

“On this note, I hereby direct the Ministry of Agriculture to map out an effective and practical strategy for partnership with the local government councils for very successful irrigation programmes and projects across the state,” said Governor Buni.

He advised the local government chairmen to imbibe the principles of accountability, transparency, and due process to be on the same page with the present administration, and with commitment to the execution of people-oriented policies and programmes to improve the lives of the people.

He also warned that the government will not compromise prudence, nor tolerate diversion or mismanagement of public resources.

“You should key into our policy of cost-effective governance. You should make governance less expensive and put more resources into projects and programmes that have a direct bearing on the lives of the people.

“The Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs is hereby directed to supervise the performances of the Management Committees.

The Governor enjoined them to ensure that all policies and programmes of the federal and state governments are adequately implemented in the interest of the people, “As you strive to explore and deepen Internally Generated Revenue sources in your areas.”

He equally informed the gathering that the state will conduct elections for the Local Government Councils in May 2024 In-Shaa Allah, to deepen the democratic processes at the grassroots level.
