US professor mistakenly shot by Osun palace security while bidding him “goodbye”

US Professor and politician Richard Adeoriokin met an untimely demise as he was mistakenly shot by a local security guard while bidding farewell after an event in Ejigbo, Osun State.

The incident unfolded around 8:30 pm on Saturday along Inisha Road, following the conclusion of a public function attended by Professor Adeoriokin, his political associates, and the son of Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oyeyode Oyesosin.

After a meeting at the king’s residence, the son instructed the security guard to fire gunshots into the air to bid farewell. However, a misdirected bullet struck the Professor, resulting in his tragic death.

The enraged mob subsequently took the life of the security guard.

Afeez Lawal, Professor Richard’s personal assistant, recounted the unfortunate incident, explaining that the Professor, a lecturer at Prairie View A&M University in Houston, Texas, and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had attended a ceremony where Governor Ademola Adeleke received a chieftaincy title.

“We headed to Ejigbo for the 50th coronation anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo. Immediately, after the event, we were almost set to go back to Osogbo,” Lawal said. The king’s son’s gesture of firing guns to bid farewell took a tragic turn when a bullet hit Professor Richard, leading to his demise at Baptist Hospital in Ejigbo.

Governor Ademola Adeleke expressed condolences, ordering a thorough investigation into the incident. He called for preventive measures to avoid potential counter-attacks or violence in the town, emphasizing the need for families not to take matters into their own hands.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), through its state chairman Tajudeen Lawal, extended condolences to Ejigbo, describing the death as tragic and wicked.

The party urged the Police Authority to investigate the matter thoroughly.
