Why I benched Enyeama, Mikel, Emenike during my time as Super Eagles coach – Oliseh

Former Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh, has revealed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) directed him to leave out three key players during his time in charge.

Oliseh named the players Vincent Enyeama, John Obi Mikel, and Emmanuel Emenike.

Oliseh, who led the national team from July 2015 to February 2016, ultimately stepped down due to the NFF’s failure to meet his contract demands.

During an interview with Elegbete TV, Sunday Oliseh explained that the NFF believed that certain players were to blame for the team’s inability to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a sentiment echoed from the previous coach, Stephen Keshi’s time.

The NFF explicitly requested Oliseh to keep these players out of the squad.

Recalling his reaction, Oliseh stated, “When I was tasked by the NFF to coach the Super Eagles, they mentioned problems with specific players that impacted our AFCON qualification.

“They told me not to call up these players. I informed them I would engage with the players first to address the situation,” he said.

He added, “I had discussions with the team captain, Enyeama, explaining my coaching methods.

“The NFF’s main concerns were centred around Enyeama, John Obi Mikel, and Emmanuel Emenike,” he revealed.
