Tragedy strikes as 2 Ghanaian sisters in US drown during swimming

The funeral service for two Ghanaian teenage sisters, Aisha Mohammed, 18, and Zainab Mohammed, 17, who tragically lost their lives while swimming at New York’s Coney Island Beach in Brooklyn, was held at Yankasa Masjid Mosque on Tuesday.

Originally from Ghana and residing in the Bronx, the sisters were reported missing after they ventured into the water and disappeared from view.

According to reports, at around 8 p.m. last Friday, the siblings were at Stillwell & Boardwalk West on Coney Island when they got into difficulty while swimming in the ocean.

Witnesses recounted a sudden rainstorm that prompted most beachgoers to seek shelter, however, despite the hazardous conditions, the sisters bravely entered the turbulent waters.

A bystander attempted to intervene but was unable to swim.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) received an emergency call for a water rescue at approximately 8:10 pm, leading to a swift response from officers and emergency responders from various units including aviation, harbor, and scuba.

Following an intense hour-long search, divers successfully recovered the sisters from the water. They were then rushed to NYC Health and Hospitals/Coney Island, where they were tragically pronounced deceased.
