Chief Okorie commeds Tinubu for signing South East development commission bill into law

President Bola Tinubu has signed the South East Development Commission Bill into law, a decision that promises to address longstanding infrastructural deficits in the region.

This significant development has been lauded by Chief Dr. Chekwas Okorie, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The bill, initially introduced in 2017 by Hon. Chukwuka Onyema, struggled to gain traction but was revitalised in 2024 by Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The renewed effort saw the bill pass through the legislative process with remarkable speed and receive prompt assent from President Tinubu.

Chief Okorie highlighted the bill’s importance, noting that it aims to address the developmental shortfalls resulting from the Nigeria-Biafra war, which ended in 1970.

The Federal Government’s previous commitment to the Reconciliation, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction (3R) program had not been fully realised, leaving the South East region without substantial federal support for nearly five decades.

President Tinubu’s enactment of the South East Development Commission Act is seen as a bold step toward healing the wounds of the past and ensuring the South East receives its due attention and resources.

Chief Okorie emphasised the need for sincere and adequate funding for the commission to achieve its goals and called on both local and diaspora communities to support this initiative.

“This action by President Tinubu is a long-overdue recognition of the South East’s needs and a promise finally being fulfilled. It is a momentous occasion for the region and a step toward true national integration,” said Chief Okorie.
