Family members assault teacher, threaten staff at Port Harcourt school

Tension escalated at Silver Bird International School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as a family allegedly viciously attacked a female teacher, Sonia Amadi, and threatened other staff members over disciplinary action taken against their J.S.S.1 student, Favour.

Reports state that the family forcefully entered the school premises and proceeded to lock the Administrative Officer, Joy Ajayi, in her office for a harrowing 40 minutes.

They then issued menacing threats towards her, prompting fear among the school staff. Only through the intervention of other parents was further violence prevented.

Narrating the terrifying ordeal, Joy Ajayi shared, “Three boys barged into my office, threatened me, and one even attempted to harm me with a pair of scissors. They were enraged over their brother’s discipline at school.”

Despite impassioned pleas from teachers and parents, the family persisted in their intimidations, insisting on the involvement of the authorities and legal representation. Ajayi managed to defend herself, leading to the arrival of the father who instructed the boys to release her.

Prior to the confrontation in the office, the family had already accosted and physically assaulted Ms. Amadi on her way to school, with the mother also reportedly striking the teacher.

In response to the incident, the school management has lodged a formal complaint at the Ada-George Police Division, and Ms. Amadi has been provided with a medical form for necessary treatment.

Expressing outrage over the attack, the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, strongly denounced the violence and intrusion at the school. He urged individuals to address any concerns through proper channels such as the Ministry of Education or law enforcement instead of resorting to aggressive actions.

Wiro demanded a thorough investigation by the police and stressed the importance of holding those accountable for their actions.
