Borno court sentences fake BDC operator to 1 year imprisonment

A Federal High Court in Maiduguri, Borno State, has sentenced one Bana Alhaji Lawan to one-year imprisonment for conducting bureau de change businesses without the necessary licence.

Lawan was sentenced by Justice A.K Dagat.

The charge against him stated that between 2007 and 2024, Lawan operated a bureau de change business without a license issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, which is a violation of the Bank and other Financial Institutions Act, 2020.

Lawan pleaded guilty to the charge and Justice Dagat ultimately sentenced him to one year in prison or a fine of N100,000.00.

Prosecution counsels requested the court to convict and sentence Lawan, while his defense counsel asked for leniency.
