Kano gov’t sponsors treatment of Mosque attack victims, vows justice

Kano State Governor, Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf, has vowed to take stringent legal action against Shafi’u Abubakar, the man who set a mosque on fire while worshippers were performing early morning prayers in the Larabar Abasawa community of Gezawa local government area of the Kano State which resulted in the death of 12 persons.

Governor Yusuf also announced that the state government would assume responsibility for the medical treatment of those injured in the fire, saying, “We shall continue to support the families of all those affected by this unfortunate incident.”

Speaking on Sunday night during a visit to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano where the victims were receiving medical attention, the Governor condoled the grieving families and offered support to the hospitalised victims and their families.

Governor Yusuf also dismissed terrorism or political violence insinuation for the attack, saying it was a case of arson.

Taking to his handle on X (formerly known as Twitter), the governor said, “On arrival in Kano this night (Sunday), I paid a visit to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital to sympathize with victims of the recent arson attack in Larabar Abasawa community of Gezawa Local Government Area.

“During the visit, I vowed that the perpetrator, who is already in police detention, will face the full wrath of the law. I also wish to reiterate that the arson incident is not linked to terrorism or political violence. We shall continue to support the families of all those affected by this unfortunate incident,” he said.

During the hospital visit, Governor Yusuf condemned the brutal act, stating that the state government would ensure justice is served. He emphasized that such acts of violence would not be tolerated in Kano State.

Recall that the Kano State Police Command has arrested 38-year-old Shafi’u Abubakar for setting fire to a mosque on Wednesday morning at Laraba Abasawa, Gezawa local government area of the state.

Abubakar used petrol to set the mosque ablaze after trapping worshipers observing morning prayers.

Police confirmed that 24 persons have received different degrees of burns resulting from the incident while some of the victims were rescued by residents nearby and rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for treatment.

After his arrest, the suspect said his action was purely in hostility following prolong family disagreement over sharing of inheritance of which those that he alleged to have cheated him were in the mosque at that moment, he said he burnt down the mosque for his voice to be heard.
