Police in Bayelsa investigate death of mother of three dumped in gutter

Story from Hamzat Ibrahim ABAGA

In Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the community along Akali Street was plunged into panic as the decomposed body of Ese, a well-known trader and mother of three from the Egbo community in Delta State, was discovered in a local gutter.

Ese, who specialized in cow skin (kpomo) trading at Opolo market, met a tragic fate that has left the neighborhood in distress. The offensive odor in the area on Sunday, January 7, prompted residents to launch a search, revealing the disturbing scene. Signs at the site suggested she had been strangled and dragged several kilometers to the gutter.

Family members, pointing fingers at the estranged ex-husband Collins, accused him of dangerous domestic violence, citing a turbulent history despite their separation last year. Precious, the deceased’s younger sister, informed family members after the search, recounting the tragic discovery of her aunt’s lifeless body in the gutter.

Allegations against Collins intensified as the family revealed his unavailability with his mobile phone switched off. They asserted that he was the last person seen with the deceased, engaging in a heated argument during his visit.

Precious shared a disturbing encounter on December 27, 2023, where Collins forcibly took back the children. Later that night, he visited their house, and since then, Ese was never seen again. Collins, when questioned, insisted she had traveled and would return by Sunday.

The Bayelsa State Police, led by ASP Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident, stating that the corpse had been evacuated, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of Ese’s tragic death.
