FG brings new charges against ex-CBN Governor Emefiele

In a recent development, the Federal Government has once again amended the charges against the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The new charges levied against him include forgery, conferring of corrupt advantage, and criminal breach of trust, among others. This update comes two months after Emefiele’s initial arraignment on six counts related to procurement irregularities concerning the award of a contract to April 1616 Investment Limited.

In August 2023, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) initially brought charges against Emefiele, Sa’adatu Yaro, and the mentioned company for alleged violations of the Procurement Act during the procurement of vehicles. Subsequently, in November, the EFCC amended the charges, dropping the co-defendants and reducing the counts against Emefiele to six.

Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail by Justice Hamza Muazu on November 22, 2023. The bail conditions included a N300 million bond, two sureties with property in Abuja’s Maitama district, surrender of travel documents, and restricted movement within the city.

The amendments and ongoing legal proceedings highlight the complexities surrounding the case and the allegations involving the former CBN Governor.
