Police in Bauchi detain 60 protesters, officer injured in demonstration

The Bauchi State Police Command reported the arrest of 60 protesters and the injury of a police officer during the first day of a 10-day nationwide protest against bad governance.
Commissioner of Police Auwal Musa Mohammed, providing an update on the situation, stated that the arrests were made due to the protesters’ violent behavior and breaches of public order.
The protesters did not secure police permission before commencing their activities.
More than 50 protesters, including women, were apprehended by the Bauchi State Police Command.
The Commissioner explained, “Fifty-two of them among the protesters were arrested for being violent and very unruly.
They tried to disturb the public peace, not based on our arrangement with them.”
He further disclosed that one police officer was injured as the protesters became unruly, engaging in phone theft and property destruction across the metropolis.
Despite being dispersed initially, the protesters, numbering over 3,000, regrouped and attempted to force their way to the Government House.
“They were stoning our policemen. They have injured some of our policemen, so we had to act fast.
The governor would have addressed them if they were not unruly,” Mohammed said.

He emphasized that the police acted professionally, avoiding any fatalities despite the protesters using women and children as shields.
“We acted professionally and we did not kill anybody. The protesters used women and children as shields, but we were able to overcome and subdue them,” he added.
The Commissioner assured that the Command would do everything possible to prevent a breakdown of law and order throughout the protest period, appealing to the public to behave in an orderly manner.
