RMAFC clarifies, each senator earns monthly salary, allowances of N1,063,860

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has addressed the salaries and allowances given to members of the National Assembly, clarifying the situation publicly.

This statement was released by the chairman of RMAFC, Mr Mohammad Shehu, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Shehu emphasised the importance of the clarification due to the ongoing discussions and concerns raised by various individuals and groups, including Shehu Sani, a former senator.

Shehu explained that each senator receives a monthly salary and allowances totaling N1,063,860, broken down into various components such as basic salary, motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance allowance, personal assistant, domestic staff, entertainment, utilities, newspapers/periodicals, wardrobe, house maintenance, and constituency allowance.

The chairman highlighted that some allowances are regular, while others are non-regular, and some are paid with the basic salary while others are paid separately.

He also clarified that certain allowances such as furniture allowance, severance gratuity, and vehicle allowance are paid once per tenure or are optional loans that must be repaid before leaving office.

Furthermore, Shehu mentioned that housing is no longer provided to most public and legislative officers, except for a few high-ranking officials.

He stressed that any allegations of additional allowances received by political or public office holders should be addressed by the individual making the claim to prevent misinformation and confusion.

Lastly, the commission urged Nigerians to refer to their official website to access the accurate details of the current remuneration package for political, public, and judicial office holders in Nigeria.
