Police arrest 30-year-old woman with AK-47 hidden in garri sack

A 30-year-old woman named Hauwa Yusuf has been arrested by the Special Tactical Squad (STS) for concealing an AK-47 rifle and four AK magazines inside a sack of garri.

Yusuf was apprehended during a stop-and-search operation along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway while travelling from Lafia, Nasarawa State, to Katsina State.

The arrest was made on August 14, 2024, following intelligence received by the STS. Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi detailed the incident during a press briefing at the STS Headquarters in Abuja.

Adejobi stated, “On August 14, 2024, operatives of STS intercepted Hauwa Yusuf, a 30-year-old from Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State, while she was in transit inside a Sienna Bus.

During the search, one AK-47 rifle and four AK magazines were discovered hidden in a white sack of garri.”

Yusuf confessed to the authorities that she was sent by a notorious bandit, Aminu Basullube, who is known for terrorising Katsina State.

Adejobi explained, “During interrogation, Yusuf admitted that Aminu Basullube, a notorious bandit, instructed her to collect the arms from the Danum Madam Camp in Katsina State. She claimed she was unaware of the contents of the sack.”

Yusuf, when questioned by journalists, insisted she did not know about the concealed weapon.

“I never knew that it was an arm that was inside,” Yusuf said. “I was asked to bring millet, but since they didn’t provide it, I took garri instead.

I was given ₦130,000 to transport the garri to Katsina. I only took the garri, and I made a mistake by not asking more questions.”

In a separate development, Adejobi also revealed that another suspect, Musa Saidu, was investigated in Igbowo, Oyo State. Saidu, who had been missing from his community for five years, returned with significant wealth.

Adejobi noted, “Saidu confessed to being involved in cattle rustling and other criminal activities under the leadership of Haruna in Birnin Gwari forest.”

As investigations continue, the authorities are focusing on further unraveling the criminal network linked to Yusuf and Basullube, aiming to address the broader implications of these illegal activities.
