39 shops burnt as fire razes Abuja’s Kaura market
A devastating fire broke out late Friday night at Kaura Modern Market in Abuja, burning down a block of 39 open shops. The fire, reportedly triggered by an electrical spark, started around 11 p.m. and raged for several hours before it was finally extinguished by a combined team of firefighters from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service (FFS) around 2 a.m. on Saturday.
MT Ibrahim, spokesperson for the FCT Fire Service, confirmed the incident, stating that the fire was caused by an electrical spark from a power changeover unit installed in one of the shops. The situation was worsened by the presence of a generator containing petrol, which significantly aggravated the blaze.
Among the items lost in the fire were foodstuffs, generators, refrigerators, fruits, umbrellas, electrical appliances, household items, and parts of the market’s roof.

Engr. Adebayo Zacchaeus, Acting Director of the FCT Fire Service, commended the firefighters for their swift response and efforts in containing the fire, despite the challenges posed by the intense flames and the flammable materials involved.
The incident has left many shop owners devastated, as they assess the extent of their losses in the aftermath of the fire.
