10 injured in Lagos as fully loaded BRT bus overturns
A serious accident occurred in Lagos on Friday when a fully loaded Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle overturned within the dedicated BRT lane at Iyana Ipaja, leaving ten passengers injured.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident took place shortly after the bus departed from the Iyana Ipaja BRT park.
Reports indicate that the bus collided with an abandoned pedestrian bridge footing immediately after the Iyana Ipaja bridge, causing it to lose balance and tip over onto its side.
Emergency responders, including LASTMA officials and medical personnel, arrived promptly at the scene to assist the injured passengers.
All ten victims received immediate medical attention, and they were transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
The extent of their injuries has not been fully disclosed, but authorities have confirmed that there were no fatalities.
LASTMA spokesperson, Adewale Adebayo, provided an update on the situation via social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “Our officers responded swiftly to the accident involving a fully loaded BRT bus at Iyana Ipaja.
All injured passengers have been attended to, and efforts are ongoing to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow.”
The accident caused significant traffic congestion in and around the Iyana Ipaja area as emergency services worked to manage the situation and remove the overturned bus from the roadway.
Motorists were advised to exercise patience and follow alternative routes where possible to ease the traffic buildup.
Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted moments of panic as the bus overturned, with some passengers sustaining injuries while attempting to exit the vehicle. “It was a terrifying sight.
The bus suddenly hit something and fell to its side. People were screaming and trying to get out,” said Chukwuemeka Okafor, a passerby who witnessed the incident.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, focusing on why the abandoned pedestrian bridge footing was left unattended and assessing whether driver error or mechanical failure contributed to the crash.
