Police arrest whistleblower PIDOM for cybercrimes, leaked documents

Officials from the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) have arrested Bristol Tamunobiefiri, known as PIDOM, in Rivers State. The arrest occurred on August 5, 2024, at his hotel room.

According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, PIDOM faces serious allegations, including unlawful possession and leakage of classified documents, as well as other cyber-related offences. The police have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted.

The arrest follows reports by investigative journalist David Hundeyin, who revealed PIDOM’s arrest on X.com (formerly Twitter) under the handle #PIDOMNIGERIA. Hundeyin’s article, titled “SOS Alert: PIDOM NIGERIA Is Missing (And I Think We May Know Who Has Him),” raised concerns about PIDOM’s disappearance, suggesting possible involvement of Nigerian authorities.

Hundeyin’s report sparked a widespread social media campaign with hashtags like #PIDOM, #FreePidom, and #WhereisPidom, demanding information about PIDOM’s whereabouts and calling for his release.

The police have confirmed that PIDOM will be arraigned in court next week. They emphasized their commitment to enforcing the law and ensuring national security.
