Authorities arrest Telegram owner, Pavel Durov, on multiple charges

Pavel Durov, the CEO and co-founder of Telegram, was arrested on Saturday evening at Le Bourget airport near Paris. The Franco-Russian billionaire, 39, was detained upon arriving from Baku, Azerbaijan.

Durov faces a range of allegations, including fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organised crime, and promoting terrorism. These charges stem from accusations that he failed to address criminal misuse of his messaging platform.

Telegram, known for its privacy features and based in Dubai, has long positioned itself against Western platforms, citing concerns over data exploitation. Durov’s arrest follows ongoing scrutiny of Telegram’s role in facilitating illegal activities through its expansive user groups.

French authorities, led by the OFMIN, are investigating these claims. Durov is expected to appear in court on Sunday.
