Tiger Woods undergoes successful back surgery, eyes comeback

Story by Jane AISO

Tiger Woods, the legendary 15-time major champion, revealed on Friday that he underwent surgery to correct a nerve impingement in his lower back. At 48, Woods has not participated in competitive golf since missing the cut at the Open Championship in July.

“The surgery went smoothly, and I’m hopeful it will relieve the back spasms and pain that plagued me throughout most of the 2024 season,” Woods announced in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I’m focused on my rehab and look forward to returning to my normal activities, including golf.”

The surgery was performed by Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi at the Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Earlier in the year, Woods participated in the Genesis Invitational, an event organized by his foundation. However, he withdrew from the tournament in the second round due to illness. Despite making the cut at the Masters for a record-breaking 24th consecutive time, Woods struggled, finishing last among the weekend players.

His season was further marred by missed cuts at the PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and The Open, where he failed to shoot par or better in any round.

Woods is now focused on his recovery, hoping for a successful return to the sport.
