Travellers stranded as flood destroys bridge on Yola-Gombe highway
Story by Jane AISO
A devastating flood triggered by torrential rains on Thursday has damaged a bridge on the Yola-Gombe highway in Adamawa State. Numerous travellers stranded have been left stranded following the disaster.
The bridge, located near the Dangote Sugar Refinery in Lamurde Local Government Area, was swept away by the relentless downpour that lasted from pre-dawn hours until 11 am.
Stranded commuters and travellers on opposite directions are left lamenting with no immediate help in view.
Some business owners conveying livestock and perishable food items could only count their losses.

Prospective travellers to Gombe and Bauchi are advised to delay their trips due to the bridge collapse. Meanwhile, those bound for Plateau and Abuja are diverting through Taraba and Benue States via a longer route.
With more rainfall forecasted, the situation may deteriorate further as a significant stretch of the Yola-Gombe road is already underwater.
The travellers have called on the authorities concerned to immediately activate the Nigerian military to provide alternative bridge along the road.
Recall that the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency listed 11 states bordering the Benue River System, namely Adamawa,Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers and Rivers to be vigilante and implement appropriate preparedness measures to mitigate potential flooding impact that may arise due to gradual release of water from Lagdo Dam by Cameroonian authorities.
