NAFDAC destroys ₦10bn worth of harmful products in Gombe
On Wednesday, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) destroyed various harmful products valued at ₦10 billion in Gombe.
During the event, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency’s Director-General, stated that the items were confiscated from six states in the North East region: Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Taraba, Gombe, and Yobe.
Represented by Zonal Director Mr. Kenneth Azukwe, Prof. Adeyeye highlighted that the destroyed products included food items, pharmaceuticals, and other regulated goods.
She emphasized that the goods were seized thanks to the diligent efforts of regulatory and enforcement officers in the region, who worked tirelessly to intercept and confiscate these dangerous items.
“NAFDAC is committed to ensuring that only quality, safe food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, and packaged water are sold and consumed in Nigeria,” she stated.
“With a steadfast commitment to protecting and promoting public health, NAFDAC has implemented rigorous standards and innovative practices that set a benchmark not only in Nigeria but also on the global stage.”
“Our agency’s dedication to excellence is reflected in its comprehensive regulatory framework, designed to safeguard the health of millions.”
“As we carry out this destruction exercise, it should serve as a clear message to unscrupulous individuals and entities that NAFDAC will not waver in its efforts to protect the health of Nigerians.”
She stated that the agency would continue to strengthen regulatory frameworks, enhance surveillance, and ensure that violators are held accountable.
“Through meticulous inspections, advanced technology, laboratory analyses, and robust enforcement, NAFDAC guarantees that only the highest quality products reach the market,” she noted.
According to her, this unwavering vigilance has earned NAFDAC international recognition and fostered collaborations with leading health organizations worldwide.
She emphasized that NAFDAC embraces advanced technologies and promotes a culture of continuous improvement, stating, “NAFDAC remains agile and responsive to emerging challenges in the dynamic landscape of public health.”
“Today’s exercise is a testament to our commitment to eliminate substandard, falsified, and unwholesome products that pose serious risks to public health. If these products were allowed to circulate, they could cause untold harm to countless individuals. By removing them, we take a decisive stand against those who seek to profit at the expense of public safety.”
NAFDAC’s Coordinator in Gombe, Mr. James Agada, mentioned that some expired products were voluntarily handed over to the agency, reaffirming NAFDAC’s dedication to safeguarding public health.
Gombe State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, praised the agency for its efforts, noting that their work contributes significantly to reducing the spread of diseases.
