PDP crisis: Go, join APC – Dino Melaye mocks Damagum

Senator Dino Melaye has taken a jab at the suspended acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, amid a growing crisis within the party. The situation intensified early on Friday when Damagum suspended the PDP’s national legal adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, citing alleged anti-party activities.

In a twist, the integrity group, a faction within the National Working Committee (NWC), swiftly announced the suspension of Damagum and national secretary, Sam Anyanwu, for similar reasons. Ologunagba, representing this group, declared Yayari Mohammed as the new acting national chairman, effective immediately, in accordance with the PDP’s amended constitution from 2017.

Ologunagba’s statement emphasized the urgency of maintaining focus among party members and leaders as the NWC prepares for the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for October 24, 2024.

However, prior to the upheaval, a court had issued an order preventing Damagum’s removal. In light of this, Melaye, a key figure in the integrity group, took to social media on Saturday to mock Damagum. He claimed that the party complied with the court’s order by suspending, rather than outright sacking him. Melaye stated, “In compliance with the court order, not to sack Damagun, he has been suspended and not sacked. We have obeyed the court order because PDP is a law-abiding party. The suspension will aid the resolution of the crisis in our party.”

This ongoing power struggle within the PDP reflects deeper divisions and challenges the party faces as it approaches critical internal meetings and preparations for upcoming elections.
