Tanker explosion claims 90 lives, reports police
At least 90 people have been confirmed dead following a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area, on Tuesday.
Jigawa Police Spokesperson Mr. Shi’isu Adam confirmed the fatalities in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday.
He also reported that 50 other individuals have been hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries from the explosion.
“The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area, when the tanker driver lost control near Khadija University, leading to the explosion,” he said.
“The driver was en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe when the accident occurred,” Adam stated. He expressed concern that, despite police warnings for people to avoid gathering at fuel tanker accident scenes, many still did so.
“The crowd around the accident site is the reason for the high number of casualties,” he explained.
The spokesperson also announced that a mass burial for the victims is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday and added that the injured are receiving treatment at Ringim General Hospital.
