Borno Police recapture inmate who escaped during flood jailbreak

The Borno Police Command announced on Wednesday that they have recaptured 24-year-old Auwalu Aminu, also known as “Auwalu Kirkir.”

Aminu, who was serving a sentence for criminal conspiracy and theft, was among the inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodian Center in Maiduguri after a jailbreak triggered by the collapse of the prison’s fence during the severe floods in September.

According to Police Public Relations Officer ASP Nahum Daso, efforts were made to track him down following the incident.

Daso stated that the police received reliable information about Aminu being spotted in Banki town. This prompted the Bama Area Command and the Banki Divisional Headquarters to swiftly deploy a patrol team to the area.

“Aminu was successfully apprehended on Oct. 16, and is now in the police custody.”

The command’s spokesperson explained that the escaped convict has been profiled and will be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action.
He also noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Lawal-Yusufu, reiterated the command’s dedication to public safety and encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities or information about fugitives.
