Snakes creep into houses as flood displaces over 200 families

Many people have been displaced by heavy flood in some parts of Rumaholu-Nkpolu Pipeline Area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Residents have cried out for help as the flood displaced over 200 families.

Speaking to newsmen, a resident attributed the disaster to the construction of houses on waterways.

Another resident, who identified himself as Thomas, said most families were forced to leave their homes after finding snakes and other reptiles coming into their houses via the flood water.

“If you follow me now into each house that had been abandoned, you will find about six snakes.

“During the night, if you don’t have any torchlight, especially while coming down from the staircase, you will see snakes. Sometimes, we almost step on the snakes and that is why most of us ran away,” he said.

Also, a female resident who pleaded anonymity blamed the flood on resident owners who built properties on the canals.

She also called on the government to come to their aid.

“We are calling on the Rivers State Government to help build an underground drainage in this area. We use boats to paddle into our houses,” she explained tearfully.

“We left the house and locked the place. But before we came back, they looted everything from my house. We are just starting all over again,” she added.
