NLC lauds Kebbi gov’t for approving ₦75,000 minimum wage

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has commended Kebbi State Government for approving N75,000 minimum wage as against the N70,000 approved by the federal government.

The amount was announced during the presentation of the Minimum Wage Committee’s report which the governor set up.

The development is a long-awaited moment for workers in the state who had anticipated a salary increase following the agreement between the NLC and the Federal Government on a N72,000 minimum wage.

The new minimum wage for Kebbi workers is a slight increase from what the Federal Government approved.

In the presence of national leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress, led by Joe Ajaero, the Secretary to the State Government, Yakubu Bala, revealed that the agreement was reached after extensive meetings between the state executives and the labour union.

After these deliberations, both parties agreed to the N75,000 minimum wage.

Governor Nasir Idris, after signing the new wage into law, affirmed that the welfare of Kebbi State workers remains a top priority, noting his background as a former labour leader turned governor.

He stated that the new minimum wage would take effect from the October salary, with immediate payment to be made within 72 hours.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, while commending Governor Idris, criticised some governors who, despite receiving more oil revenue, have approved only minimal wage increases.

He stressed that the union will continue its efforts until more states approve suitable wages for their workers.

The NLC leaders chanted solidarity songs in appreciation of the governor’s decision on behalf of the state’s workers.
