Labourer kills wife, matchetes 3-year-old son
A tragic incident unfolded in Ondo State’s Idanre Local Government Area, where a labourer, Sunday Emmanuel, allegedly killed his wife, Linda, and attacked his 3-year-old son over a disagreement regarding their annual earnings.
According to police sources, the incident took place on October 7, 2024, at about 5:30 a.m. in Ogbeni Camp, a remote area in Ofosu. Emmanuel reportedly had a heated argument with his wife about how they should spend their annual wages. The disagreement escalated, and Emmanuel allegedly used a machete to strike his wife, inflicting fatal injuries on her neck and cheek.
As the altercation continued, Emmanuel allegedly turned on his young son, also named Sunday, striking him on the head with the machete. The child sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The Ondo State Police Command was alerted and quickly intervened, arresting Emmanuel and taking him into custody. He was subsequently remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility, pending further investigation.
On his initial appearance in court, Emmanuel faced two charges: murder and attempted murder. Police Prosecutor Josephine Awanna informed the court that the charges, under Sections 319 (1) and 320 (1) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo State, 2006, are punishable by law. Due to the severity of the accusations, the court declined to take Emmanuel’s plea.
Magistrate Olateju Odenusi-Fadeyi ordered Emmanuel’s remand, noting that the case would be referred to the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice. The next court date has been set for February 2, 2025, when further proceedings will determine the way forward.
Meanwhile, authorities have initiated the process of notifying family members, and the local community remains shaken by the tragedy.
