2025 AFCON: South Sudan triumphs over Congo as Uganda, South Africa secure tickets

South Sudan clinched an exhilarating 3-2 victory over Congo in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Thursday, a win that also ensured Uganda and South Africa’s qualification for the tournament set to take place in Morocco next year.

In a dramatic match at Juba National Stadium, South Sudan showed immense determination by coming from behind to claim their first points of the campaign in Group K.

Congo struck first, showcasing their intent when Christopher Ibayi headed in from close range in the 26th minute.

The lead, however, was short-lived as South Sudan responded swiftly with Ebon Malish scoring an equalizer through a powerful header in the 31st minute.

Congo regained their advantage just four minutes later when Ibayi found the net again, this time with a precise shot from a tight angle.

But South Sudan was not to be outdone. In first-half stoppage time (45+2′), Malish once again came to the rescue, heading in a cross from William Gama to level the score at 2-2.

The home side carried their momentum into the second half, pressing relentlessly against the visitors.

The turning point came in the 78th minute when Bryan Passi of Congo received a red card, leaving his team with ten men.

South Sudan capitalised on this opportunity, and in the 84th minute, substitute Data Elly scored the decisive goal with a clinical finish, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

With this result, South Sudan improved their standing to three points, trailing just behind Congo’s four points in Group K.

Uganda now leads the group with 10 points, followed by South Africa with eight.

The outcome of this match means third-placed Congo can no longer overtake Uganda and South Africa, cementing the latter’s two teams’ qualification for the 2025 TotalEnergies AFCON in Morocco.

“We fought as one and never gave up,” said South Sudan’s coach after the match, lauding his players’ resilience. “This win is a historic moment for us and our fans.”

The final round of matches will now determine the final standings, but Uganda and South Africa can already look forward to competing in Morocco next year.
