Senate okays Reps’ confirmation of Oluyede as Chief of Army Staff

The Senate has officially confirmed Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff, following President Bola Tinubu’s nomination. The confirmation was made on Tuesday during the Senate plenary.
This decision came after a report was presented by the Senate Committee on Army, chaired by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua (APC, Katsina Central). The committee had conducted a screening session for Oluyede on November 26, during his tenure as acting Chief of Army Staff.
While presenting the report, Senator Yar’Adua emphasised that Oluyede possessed the requisite qualifications and fulfilled all necessary criteria for the position.
The Senate’s confirmation was unanimous, with all senators in attendance endorsing the appointment during the Committee of the Whole’s deliberations.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised Oluyede’s leadership abilities and expressed optimism about his capacity to tackle the nation’s security challenges, particularly the threats posed by terrorism and banditry.

He also extended condolences on the passing of the former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, offering prayers for the repose of his soul.
The House of Representatives had earlier confirmed Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff last week.
President Tinubu had formally requested the Senate’s confirmation of Oluyede’s appointment last week, citing constitutional provisions under Section 218 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act.
In his letter to the Senate President, Tinubu described Oluyede as “a seasoned officer known for his exceptional leadership, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to national security and unity.”
General Oluyede was initially appointed as the acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, following the illness and subsequent passing of his predecessor, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja.
