Nigerian man arrested in India for ₦8m fraud

The police force in India has confirmed the arrest and detainment of a Nigerian national for fraud.

The accused, Mathew Emeka, 30 years old, was said to have duped an Indian woman of Rs 4.45 lakh (₦8 million). According to reports, in 2023, Emeka had tricked some residents of Nenmeni by claiming that he had sent dollars as a gift and demanded money to clear the package at the Delhi airport.

The fraud was reportedly repeated multiple times between October, November, and December 2023. The victim filed a complaint at the police station after realizing she had been duped.

Emeka was arrested from Delhi on Sunday, December 15, 2024, following investigations into the bank transaction details by the Wayanad police in Kerala.

He was produced before the Dwarka Court in Delhi and brought to the Ambalavayal police station on a transit remand.
