Man mauled to death by 3 of his dogs at playground
A California man tragically lost his life when his three powerful dogs turned on him at a San Diego playground, horrifying onlookers who desperately tried to intervene.
The attack occurred around noon at Mesa Viking Neighbourhood Park, prompting frantic calls to San Diego police. When officers arrived, they found the victim being savagely mauled by what witnesses described as “XL bullies.”
Despite bystanders’ efforts to save the man using shovels and a golf club, the dogs continued their relentless attack.
“I just saw they had something trapped in the weeds over here. I thought it was a person at first because they were talking about setting up a perimeter,” said neighbour Steve Marto. “They were big, like XL bullies, just massive muscle.”

Police eventually used tasers to subdue two of the dogs, while a third escaped into the surrounding neighbourhood. The loose animal triggered a lockdown at nearby Ericson Elementary School until it was found and captured.
“The officer was able to break up the dogs. They fled, and the injured male was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries,” police reported. Tragically, the man later succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.
A child who was with the victim at the playground was unharmed during the attack. The fate of the dogs remains unclear.
Marto, while sympathetic to the victim, criticised the decision to keep such powerful animals, “I don’t understand why someone would want to have three dogs that size. You’re just looking for a problem, in my opinion,” he said.
